Musings on MoPaQ

If you’ve ever played a Blizzard game, you might know that the data is stored in .mpq, or MoPaQ, files.

Over on Q & Stuff, Justin Olbrantz has posted a nice overview of how the MoPaQ format compares to standard filesystems and archive formats, assessing the pros and cons of each of its tricks. It’s a very good read.

Olbrantz and Jean-François Roy have written up technical documentation of the format on Roy’s /dev/klog, which also has MPQ-related software, including a read-only FUSE-based filesystem, mpqfs, for browsing the contents of those files.
